A magnetic mounting pad works by attaching itself to a piece of ferromagnetic material, such as a car roof.

A magnetic mounting pad has a strong pull force (the magnet’s attraction force) and a strong shear force (the ability to resist external forces). This means that around twice the amount of force is required to remove the magnet from the ferromagnetic material it is attached to.

Pull force – The pull force of the magnetic mounting pad is the force which attracts the magnet to a ferromagnetic material. The larger the pull force of the magnetic mounting pad, the more material it can hold. This is because the pull force is the limit of holding power a magnet has.

The pull force of a magnet is not determined by its overall size. This means that a large magnet does not necessarily have a larger pull force than a small magnet

Shear strength – Due to the magnetic mounting pad’s rubber coating it also has a high shear strength ranging from 30 newtons (3kg) to 220 newtons (22.4kg).The amount of shear strength a magnet has depends on its overall size e.g a large magnetic mounting pad will have a large amount of shear strength.

Shear strength refers to the magnet’s ability to resist any external forces trying to make the magnet slip from the ferromagnetic surface. This shear strength allows the magnetic mounting pad to withstand a speed of up to 100 mph (160.93 kph) on a moving vehicle.
