Eyelets can easily be replaced or even added to a tarpaulin to create additional fixing points.
This can be done using an eyelet repair kit.
When using an eyelet repair kit such as the one in this picture, a hammer will also be required.
Step 1 – Create hole
With the hole punch/cutter placed where the hole is to be created, strike it with a hammer to cut a hole in the tarpaulin.
Step 2 – Insert lower half
Place the lower half of the eyelet on the eyelet holder, under the tarpaulin, so that it sticks up through the hole.
When doing this, you should turn the tarpaulin upside down, so that when the process is complete, the shank emerges from the underside of the tarpaulin.
Step 3 – Connect top half
Connect the top half of the eyelet so that the tarpaulin material is sandwiched between the pieces of the eyelet.
Step 4 – Strike with hammer
Place the “eyelet punch tool” on top of the eyelet, and strike with a hammer.
…et voila! You have just attached a new eyelet.
Replacing eyelets using eyelet pliers
There are also several types of eyelet and grommet pliers. Some of these can be used on tarpaulins as an alternative method of attaching eyelets.
Some models, however, may not be suitable for putting eyelets in a tarpaulin, working with eyelets that are simply too small for the job.
It is advised that you check whether a particular tool is suited to use with a tarpaulin.
Step 1 – Create hole
Cut a hole in the tarpaulin for the eyelet to sit in. Some pliers may have a cutting feature built in to the tool.
Step 2 – Insert shank
Attach the eyelet to the material by pushing the shank through the hole, and then placing the washer on top, so that the tarpaulin is sandwiched between the two.
Step 3 – Use pliers
Place the eyelet and tarpaulin into the pliers and close the handle, applying enough force to secure the eyelet in place. Should this not secure the eyelet, you should use the pliers again.
