A gasket scraper is a hand tool used by mechanics in the automotive industry to remove gasket residue. It has a handle, long shaft and blade, and resembles a screwdriver combined with a chisel.
What is a gasket?
A gasket is a steel, copper or aluminium sheet or ring that is used between two machine parts or around pipe joints in an engine to prevent the escape of a gas or fluid.
A gasket scraper is used to remove the gasket residue before a new gasket is installed. Gasket residue needs to be removed so the new gasket can be placed onto the engine block smoothly with no bumps or gaps.
Gasket residue can consist of pieces of old gasket, sealant, hardened oil or carbon deposits from engine parts. After a gasket is removed from an engine block, a gasket scraper is used to remove this residue.
Engine block
The engine block forms the body of the vehicle’s engine. It is the aluminium or iron block that contains the oil, crank shaft, cooling ducts, pistons and cylinders.
