This guide shows how to use a quadrant for scraping; for scraping with one of the straight edges, see How to use a flat cabinet scraper. When using quadrant scrapers you are not able to scrape all the way into internal right-angle corners with the straight edges because there are no square corners on the tool.

Step 1 – Clamp workpiece

Secure your workpiece in a vice or clamp, or against a workbench stop, ensuring that whole of the face or edge to be scraped is above the securing parts, giving free access to the workpiece surface.

Step 2 – Choose correct quadrant width

The quadrants located on the corners each have a different radius. You need to select the correct quadrant for the particular job, otherwise you can damage or lose the shape of the surface.

To find the correct quadrant, gently place and test the different ones over the convex area of the wood you are going to be scraping.

Step 3 – Hold scraper

Hold the scraper on opposite sides with both hands. Angle the scraper so the quadrant blade fits evenly over the surface you are going to scrape.

Step 4 – Place scraper

You can start using your scraper at the beginning of the surface closest to you or you place the scraper at the far end of the surface.

Step 5 – Scrape workpiece

Using both your hands, push or pull the scraper all the way across the surface in one movement.

Remember when pushing or pulling the scraper the grain needs to be sloping upwards and away from the scraper, rather than downwards towards it. otherwise the scraper will dig in too far, causing tear-out.

Step 6 – Finish scraping

Scrape the area of your work until the surface is smooth and even.
