Step 1 – Clamp workpiece

Secure your workpiece in a vice or clamp, or against a workbench stop, ensuring that whole of the face or edge to be scraped is above the securing parts, giving free access to the workpiece surface.

Step 2 – Place scraper on wood

Place the scraper on the surface of the wood and grab its handles with both hands.

Make sure the clamping screws are facing away from you.

Step 3 – Angle scraper

Hold the scraper slightly skewed to start a cut.

Step 4 – Scrape workpiece

Push the scraper away from you, to start scraping the surface of the wood.

Step 5 – Finish off workpiece

Repeat the pushing of the scraper evenly along the surface where you want to create a smooth and even finish.

Step 6 – Check smoothness

Make sure you have completely scraped the surface, checking for an even and smooth finish.

Use a steel rule to check the surface.

Step 7 – Satisfied or not

If you are not satisfied with the smoothness of the surface or if it is not even, focus on the areas that need more material removing.
