Are there any alternatives to multimeters?

Multimeters are tools designed to combine the functions of many other tools. This means that there are alternatives for each of the functions multimeters can carry out. These alternatives will often be used in the same way as multimeters. 

Most multimeters can be considered ammeters, voltmeters and ohmmeters, which are the individual versions of the testers used to measure current, voltage and resistance, respectively. 

Digital thermometers are the alternative for the temperature sensor on a multimeter and would probably be preferred if that is the primary usage needed. 

The other functions, like capacitance and diode testing are rarer and a multimeter would generally be the first choice for carrying them out. 

A multimeter is the generally preferred tool for all electrical troubleshooting tasks, because of its versatility. Multimeters are also more widely available than individual tools for checking current, voltage and resistance.

A multimeter also tends to be more reliable, making it the better choice for most people.
