A multimeter is an instrument which combines several electrical testing tools into one piece of equipment. It is box-shaped, with a display, dial, buttons, sockets, and removable cables. |
Depending on the type, a multimeter can carry out current, voltage, resistance, continuity, polarity, capacitance, frequency, temperature, duty cycle and diode and transistor testing.

There is also a slightly different type of multimeter, called a clamp meter, which can test and measure things without coming into contact with them, like insulated wires. |
Nowadays, multimeters are mostly digital, but there are still some analogue types to be found. Some users may still prefer the analogue reading, however, the digital multimeter (DMM) is generally preferred for ease of use. |
A multimeter is an alternative to many of the other electrical testing tools available and replaces the need for having multiple pieces of equipment. |
Most multimeters are powered by a 9V or two AA batteries, which they are usually supplied with. |
